This recording was taken at the edge of the Siskiyou Wilderness Area. The recorder was left running in camp all night while my partner (James "Bobo" Fay) and I went for short walks on the trails and abandoned roads that snake through this area, returning to camp every forty-five minutes or so.

We had left camp about four minutes before the whistle was recorded. The knock came about 40 or 45 seconds after the whistle, but I edited out the silence to make the recording smaller. The battery that powered the microphone's preamp was running out of juice, which introduced a strange clicking noise on the recording, which was also digitally removed in this recording.
